Keeping an LED face mask in top condition comes down to a few simple habits: wipe it after every session, give it a gentle deeper clean each week, store it somewhere cool and dry, and handle the straps and cable with care. Most problems people run into, from a mask that won’t switch on to lights that seem dim, have quick fixes. Looked after well, a quality LED mask will keep delivering consistent sessions for years. Here’s how to clean, store and troubleshoot your device, plus what to do if you need help.
Why does LED face mask maintenance matter?
Your LED mask sits directly against your skin several times a week. That makes regular care important for three reasons:
- Hygiene: natural oils, sweat and traces of skincare build up on the inside surface. Left there, they’re not ideal for breakout-prone or sensitive skin.
- Longevity: harsh cleaners, heat and rough handling can wear down silicone, straps and connections over time.
- Consistent sessions: a clean, well-fitting mask sits evenly against your face, so the light reaches your skin the way it’s designed to.
How to clean your LED face mask
After every session
Unplug the mask, then wipe the inside of the mask and collar with a soft, damp cloth to remove any residue or sweat. Let both pieces air dry completely before you put them away. This takes less than a minute and does most of the work.
Once a week: a deeper clean
- Make sure the device is switched off and unplugged.
- Dampen a soft cloth with a mild, non-alcoholic cleanser or gentle disinfectant.
- Wipe the inner surface of the mask and collar, paying attention to the areas around the eyes, nose and chin.
- Wipe the outer surfaces and straps.
- Go over everything once more with a cloth dampened with clean water.
- Pat dry with a soft towel and leave to air dry fully before storing.
What to avoid when cleaning
- Alcohol wipes, bleach, acetone or other harsh chemicals, which can dry out and damage silicone
- Abrasive sponges or scrubbing brushes
- Soaking or submerging the mask, collar or controller
- Getting water into the charging ports or cable connections
- Drying with a hairdryer, heater or in direct sun
- Cleaning while the device is plugged in
How should you store an LED face mask?
Where you keep your mask between sessions makes a bigger difference than most people expect. Bathrooms are a common choice, but steam and humidity aren’t kind to electronics.
- Store the mask and collar in a cool, dry place, ideally in the bag or box they came in
- Keep them out of direct sunlight, which can fade and weaken silicone over time
- Make sure both pieces are completely dry before packing them away
- Lay the mask flat or in its natural shape rather than folding or crushing it
- Loosely coil the cable instead of wrapping it tightly around the controller
- Keep it out of reach of pets and small children
Everyday handling tips
A little care when you put the mask on and take it off goes a long way.
- Use clean, dry hands: this keeps oils and moisture off the device and the controls.
- Adjust the straps gently: stretching them hard or yanking them loose puts strain on the material and the attachment points.
- Hold the plug, not the cable: pulling on the cord to disconnect it can loosen connections over time.
- Use it on dry skin, in a dry room: avoid using the mask straight out of the shower or in a steamy bathroom. If moisture gets on the device, pat it dry straight away.
- Check it now and then: look for loose parts, frayed cables or wear on the straps. Catching something early makes it easier to sort out.

Troubleshooting common LED face mask problems
Before assuming something is faulty, run through these quick checks. Most issues have a simple explanation.
The mask won’t switch on
Check that the cable is pushed firmly into both the controller and the power source, and that the ports are completely dry. Try a different USB adapter or power outlet. Press and hold the power button rather than tapping it.
Some lights look dim or switched off
This is often near-infrared light at work. Near-infrared sits at around 850 nanometres (nm), just beyond what the human eye can easily see, so those LEDs may show only a faint red glow or look switched off even when they’re running normally. If visible red, blue or yellow LEDs aren’t lighting on a setting that should use them, check which mode you’ve selected, then contact support. You can read more about how this light works in our guide to infrared LED light therapy.
The mask feels warm
Gentle warmth during a session is normal. If the device feels hot, or your skin feels uncomfortable, stop the session, unplug the mask and let it cool. Contact support if it happens again.
The mask slips or doesn’t sit evenly
Readjust the straps so the mask sits close to your face without pressing hard on your nose or cheeks. If a strap has stretched or worn, get in touch, as a better fit means more even light across your skin.
The controller doesn’t respond
Unplug the device, wait a few seconds and reconnect it. Make sure the buttons and controller are clean and dry, as residue from skincare or hand cream can make them sticky.
There’s a lingering smell or residue
This usually means skincare or sweat has built up on the surface. Do a weekly deeper clean, and make sure you’re starting each session on clean, bare skin. Our post on common LED face mask mistakes explains why products are best applied after your session, not before.
How Luminex Glow is designed to last
We built the Luminex Glow LED Face Mask & Collar to be used several times a week, every week, so durability was part of the design from the start.
Built for long-term use
- Soft, flexible medical-grade silicone that bends with your face rather than cracking like a rigid plastic shell
- A smooth surface that’s quick to wipe clean after every session
- USB-C power, so you can use any standard USB-C cable or adapter instead of hunting for a proprietary charger
- A built-in session timer that switches the device off automatically at the end of each session
- A separate mask and collar, so each piece is easier to clean, store and fit

Wipe the inside of the mask and collar with a soft, damp cloth after every session, and give it a deeper clean with a mild, non-alcoholic cleanser once a week.
It’s best not to. Alcohol and other harsh chemicals can dry out and damage silicone over time. A mild, non-alcoholic cleanser on a soft cloth is gentler and just as effective for regular cleaning.
